On this day, December 19, 1986, Platoon premiered in theaters. Directed by Oliver Stone, the gripping Vietnam War drama stars Charlie Sheen, Willem Dafoe, and Tom Berenger. Known for its raw, unflinching portrayal of war, Platoon quickly became a landmark film in cinema history.

The movie went on to win four Academy Awards, including Best Picture and Best Director for Oliver Stone. It also made its mark with intense dialogue, featuring the “F” word 159 times—second only to Scarface at the time. Platoon holds a prestigious spot as #83 on AFI’s Top 100 Greatest Movies list.
