On this day, December 18, 1985, the epic romantic drama Out of Africa premiered in theaters. Starring Robert Redford and Meryl Streep, and directed by Sydney Pollack, the film tells the sweeping story of writer Karen Blixen’s (Streep) life in Kenya and her complicated relationship with hunter Denys Finch Hatton (Redford).

The movie was a critical and commercial success, winning seven Academy Awards, including Best Picture and Best Director. It also claimed awards for Best Screenplay, Best Cinematography, Best Art Direction, Best Original Score, and Best Sound, making it one of the most celebrated films of the 80s.
