On this day October 10 1985, a U.S. Navy F-14 fighter jet intercepted an Egyptian airliner carrying four Palestinian hijackers responsible for the takeover of the Italian cruise ship Achille Lauro. The dramatic midair operation forced the plane to land at a NATO base in Sicily, where the hijackers were taken into custody.
