On May 2, 1986, the drama film Saving Grace was released in theaters. Directed by Robert M. Young, the movie starred Tom Conti as a pope who sneaks away from the Vatican to reconnect with the real world and ends up helping a struggling village rebuild their community.

The cast also included Giancarlo Giannini and Edward James Olmos. Despite its heartfelt story and strong performances, Saving Grace struggled at the box office, earning only 18,209 dollars during its theatrical run.
