On this day June 21, 1985, Return to Oz premiered in theaters. Directed by Walter Murch in his directorial debut, the film served as a darker and more unsettling continuation of the classic Wizard of Oz story. Based on L Frank Baum’s later Oz novels, the film introduced a new generation to Dorothy, played by Fairuza Balk, as she returns to a ruined Emerald City and encounters terrifying new villains like Princess Mombi and the Wheelers.
