On this day June 20, 1988, New Edition released their fifth studio album HeartBreak. It was a defining moment for the group, marking the debut of new member Johnny Gill and a sharp evolution in their sound from bubblegum pop to mature new jack swing.

Produced by Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis, the album climbed to number twelve on the Billboard 200 and included major hits like Can You Stand the Rain, If It Isn't Love and the title track HeartBreak.
