On this day, January 6, 1986, All My Children star Peter Bergman appeared in a Vicks Formula 44 commercial and delivered the now-iconic line, “I’m not a doctor, but I play one on TV.”

Bergman, known for his role as Dr. Cliff Warner on the hit soap opera, became a cultural sensation with the ad, which cleverly capitalized on his fictional medical expertise. The line was so memorable that it became a catchphrase, often referenced in pop culture to this day.

Fun Fact: Peter Bergman later transitioned to another iconic soap opera role as Jack Abbott on The Young and the Restless, a part he’s played since 1989.

Do you remember seeing this commercial? What other advertising catchphrases from the 80s still stick with you today?
