On this day, January 25, 1980, Paul McCartney was released from a Japanese jail after being arrested for attempting to smuggle half a pound of marijuana into the country. The former Beatle had been detained for nine days after customs officials discovered the drugs in his luggage upon his arrival at Tokyo’s Narita International Airport.

The arrest shocked fans worldwide and led to McCartney being deported and banned from entering Japan for several years. The incident also caused the cancellation of his band Wings’ scheduled tour of Japan, disappointing countless fans who had eagerly awaited their performances.

Fun Fact: Paul McCartney later described the arrest as “the most embarrassing moment of my life,” and he avoided touring in Japan for nearly a decade afterward.

Trivia Question: Which song by Paul McCartney and Wings became a #1 hit in 1973 and was later featured in a James Bond film?
