On this day, January 17, 1986, the fantasy-horror film Troll, directed by John Carl Buechler, premiered in theaters. The movie featured a quirky and diverse cast, including Noah Hathaway, Michael Moriarty, Shelley Hack, Sonny Bono, and a young Julia Louis-Dreyfus in one of her earliest film roles.

The story follows the Potter family, who move into a new apartment building only to discover that their daughter has been possessed by a troll intent on transforming the building into a magical realm. With its blend of campy horror and whimsical fantasy, Troll gained a cult following despite its modest $1.1 million budget, earning $5.5 million at the box office.

Fun Fact: Julia Louis-Dreyfus, later famous for her roles in Seinfeld and Veep, played a tenant turned woodland nymph in one of her earliest on-screen appearances.

Trivia Question: What unrelated 1990 sequel to Troll became infamous as one of the worst movies ever made and gained its own cult following?
