On this day, January 12, 1986, Florida Congressman Bill Nelson took off from Kennedy Space Center aboard Space Shuttle Columbia as a payload specialist on mission STS-61-C. Nelson became the second sitting member of Congress to fly in space, participating in NASA’s initiative to involve civilians in space exploration.

During the six-day mission, Nelson assisted in conducting scientific experiments and deploying the Satcom K-1 communications satellite. His experience provided unique insights into the role of space technology in addressing global challenges, which he later applied in his political career.

Fun Fact: Bill Nelson went on to serve as NASA Administrator in 2021, continuing his dedication to space exploration and science policy.

How do you think having civilians like Bill Nelson in space missions impacts public interest in space exploration?
