On this day, February 15, 1989, the Soviet Union officially announced that all of its troops had withdrawn from Afghanistan, marking the end of a nearly decade-long military occupation. The Soviet invasion began in December 1979, with the goal of propping up Afghanistan’s communist government against insurgent groups known as the Mujahideen.
