On this day, December 17, 1981, American Brigadier General James L. Dozier was abducted by the Italian terrorist group, the Red Brigades, in Verona, Italy. The kidnapping was part of the Red Brigades’ campaign against NATO and Western influence in Italy during the 1970s and 1980s.

General Dozier was held hostage for 42 days before being rescued on January 28, 1982, by Italian special forces in a daring and successful operation. The incident highlighted the ongoing threat of terrorism in Europe during that era and the resilience of international efforts to combat it.
