On this day, December 12, 1985, Arrow Air Flight 1285 tragically crashed shortly after takeoff in Gander, Newfoundland, killing all 256 people on board. Among the victims were 236 members of the United States Army’s 101st Airborne Division, returning home from peacekeeping duties in the Sinai Peninsula.

The crash remains one of the deadliest aviation disasters in history and deeply affected both the U.S. military and the Canadian town of Gander, which rallied to assist during the crisis. The exact cause of the crash has been a topic of debate, with initial investigations citing icing on the wings and later controversies suggesting other possible factors.
