On this day, December 21, 1988, the Antonov An-225 Mriya, the largest aircraft in the world, took its maiden flight. Designed by the Antonov Design Bureau in the Soviet Union, this massive cargo plane was built to transport the Buran space shuttle and other oversized loads.

The An-225 remains an engineering marvel, with a wingspan of 290 feet and a maximum takeoff weight of 640 tons. Even decades later, it holds the record as the largest and heaviest aircraft ever constructed.

Have you ever seen the Antonov An-225 Mriya?
