On this day, November 26, 1983, one of the most infamous heists in history took place at Heathrow Airport in London. Over $26 million worth of gold bars, diamonds, and cash were stolen from the Brink’s-Mat vault.
Dubbed the “crime of the century,” the robbery was carried out by a gang with inside information. The heist quickly spiraled into a criminal saga, involving money laundering and violence, as the stolen gold was melted down and sold off. Many of the perpetrators were eventually caught, but much of the gold remains unaccounted for to this day.
