On this day, December 16, 1987, the romantic comedy Moonstruck premiered in limited theaters. Directed by Norman Jewison, the film stars Cher in a career-defining role as Loretta Castorini, a widowed bookkeeper who falls for her fiancé’s eccentric brother, played by Nicolas Cage.

The movie was a critical and commercial success, grossing $80.6 million at the box office on a $15 million budget. Moonstruck received six Academy Award nominations and won three, including Best Actress for Cher, Best Supporting Actress for Olympia Dukakis, and Best Original Screenplay for John Patrick Shanley. Its witty dialogue, memorable performances, and heartfelt story have made it a beloved classic.
