With a $15 million budget, Mississippi Burning grossed $34.6 million at the box office and earned critical acclaim for its intense performances and harrowing portrayal of racial injustice during the Civil Rights Movement. The film went on to receive seven Academy Award nominations, winning Best Cinematography for Peter Biziou.
