On this day, December 21, 1985, Lionel Richie’s “Say You, Say Me” reached #1 on the US Billboard Hot 100, where it stayed for four weeks, from December 21 to January 17. The song also topped the charts in Canada, the Netherlands, Norway, and South Africa.

Written and performed by Richie, Say You, Say Me served as the theme song for the film White Nights, which starred Mikhail Baryshnikov and Gregory Hines. The heartfelt ballad went on to win the Academy Award for Best Original Song and a Golden Globe, cementing its place as one of Richie’s most memorable tracks
