On this day, December 19, 1986, King Kong Lives premiered in theaters. Directed by John Guillermin, the sequel to the 1976 King Kong starred Linda Hamilton, Brian Kerwin, and John Ashton.

The story follows the resurrection of King Kong, now fitted with an artificial heart, and the discovery of Lady Kong, leading to a bizarre and tragic romance. Despite its ambitious concept, King Kong Lives failed to win over critics and audiences, grossing only $4.7 million against an $18 million budget.

While it remains a low point in the King Kong franchise, the film has developed a cult following for its over-the-top premise and effects.
