Overview:
Japanese Whispers: The Cure Singles Nov 82: Nov 83 is a compilation album by British rock group The Cure. It was released in late 1983 by their record company, Fiction Records.
It compiles the singles "Let's Go to Bed", "The Walk" and "The Lovecats". The other tracks are the B-sides of these singles, although "Mr. Pink Eyes" (the second B-side for "The Lovecats") was not included. The songs were recorded when the band was in a transitional phase after bassist Simon Gallup left following a tour to promote the previous album, Pornography. Beginning with these singles, Lol Tolhurst switched from drums to keyboards, a role he kept until his departure in 1989.
For first two singles' tracks The Cure is a duo consisting of Tolhurst and Robert Smith, with the addition of a session drummer for the tracks from "Let's Go to Bed". For the last single, a full band was assembled with the addition of bassist/producer Phil Thornalley, who had worked with the band on Pornography, and drummer Andy Anderson, a lineup which would continue for the Concert live album.
In 1986, the singles' lead tracks were included in the Staring at the Sea compilation album, while all of the B-sides have been included in the 2004 B-sides and rarities box set Join The Dots.

"Japanese Whispers: The Cure Singles Nov 82: Nov 83" is indeed a fascinating snapshot of The Cure's evolution during the early 1980s. Released in December 1983, this compilation captures a pivotal moment for the band, as they transitioned from the darker tones of "Pornography" to a more pop-oriented sound.

The album's singles, such as "Let's Go to Bed," "The Walk," and "The Lovecats," showcase Robert Smith's exploration of new musical directions, blending catchy melodies with the band's signature alternative rock style. The inclusion of B-sides like "The Dream" and "Lament" adds depth to the collection, offering fans a glimpse into the creative processes that were shaping The Cure's future.

This period also marked a significant lineup change, with Lol Tolhurst moving to keyboards and the introduction of Phil Thornalley and Andy Anderson, who contributed to the band's evolving sound. The compilation serves as a bridge between The Cure's early post-punk roots and their later success in the mainstream music scene.

"Japanese Whispers" remains a beloved collection for fans, capturing the essence of The Cure's adaptability and innovation during a transformative era in their career.
