On this day, January 9, 1988, Whitney Houston’s So Emotional reached #1 on the US Billboard Hot 100, where it stayed for the week of January 9–15. This high-energy track, featured on her second studio album Whitney, was a perfect showcase of her powerful vocals and dynamic stage presence.

Written by Billy Steinberg and Tom Kelly—who also wrote other #1 hits like Like a Virgin (Madonna) and True Colors (Cyndi Lauper)—So Emotional became Whitney’s sixth consecutive #1 single, a record-breaking streak at the time. With its mix of pop, rock, and R&B, the song remains one of her most beloved dance anthems.

Fun Fact: So Emotional was part of Whitney Houston’s streak of seven consecutive #1 singles, a record she still holds today.

What’s your favorite Whitney Houston song? How do you think So Emotional compares to her other chart-topping hits?
