On this day, January 8, 1981, the Broadway revival of The Pirates of Penzance opened at the Uris Theatre in New York City. This updated production of the classic Gilbert and Sullivan operetta was a fresh take on the beloved story of pirates, duty, and love, infused with modern energy and humor.

Starring Kevin Kline as the swashbuckling Pirate King, Linda Ronstadt as Mabel, and Rex Smith as Frederic, the revival was an instant success. Directed by Wilford Leach, with choreography by Graciela Daniele, the production received rave reviews for its lively performances and accessible approach to the material.

The show won three Tony Awards, including Best Revival, and helped popularize Gilbert and Sullivan for a new generation of theatergoers. It also inspired a 1983 film adaptation starring much of the Broadway cast.

Fun Fact: Kevin Kline’s portrayal of the Pirate King became one of the most iconic interpretations of the role, earning him a Tony Award for Best Actor in a Musical.

Did you ever see The Pirates of Penzance on Broadway or in its film adaptation? What’s your favorite Gilbert and Sullivan operetta?
