On this day, January 7, 1980, rhythm and blues singer Larry Williams was tragically found dead in his Los Angeles home from a gunshot wound to the head at the age of 44. Williams was best known for his energetic 1950s hits, including Bony Moronie, Dizzy Miss Lizzy, and Short Fat Fannie, which influenced rock legends like The Beatles and The Rolling Stones.

The circumstances surrounding his death remain a mystery. Authorities were unable to determine whether it was a murder or suicide. At the time, Williams had reportedly been struggling with financial difficulties and personal challenges, but he also maintained connections to the music industry and had a lasting legacy as a pioneering R&B artist.

Fun Fact: The Beatles covered two of Larry Williams’ songs Dizzy Miss Lizzy and Bad Boy on their albums, showcasing his impact on the rock ‘n’ roll movement of the 1960s.

What’s your favorite Larry Williams song? How do you think his music shaped the rock and R&B genres?
