On this day, January 5, 1986, Blacke’s Magic premiered on NBC. This mystery-comedy series starred Hal Linden as Alexander Blacke, a retired magician who used his skills of illusion and misdirection to solve crimes. Paired with his con-artist father Leonard, played by Harry Morgan (MASH*), the duo brought charm and wit to each case they tackled.

The series had a unique blend of mystery and magic, offering a fresh twist on the detective genre. However, despite its intriguing premise and strong cast, Blacke’s Magic struggled in the ratings and was canceled after just one season with 14 episodes.

Fun Fact: Hal Linden was already a household name from his role on Barney Miller, and Blacke’s Magic gave him a chance to show off a different side of his acting abilities.

Do you remember Blacke’s Magic? Would you like to see more shows today that combine magic and mystery?
