On this day, January 5, 1980, the final episode of A New Kind of Family aired on ABC. This short-lived sitcom had a unique premise: two very different families—a traditional single mother with a teenage daughter and a free-spirited widow with two kids—move in together to share expenses.

Despite its fresh concept and promising cast, including Rob Lowe in one of his earliest roles and Janet Jackson before her rise to superstardom, the show struggled to find an audience. It lasted only one season with 10 episodes before being canceled.

Fun Fact: Did you know? This series marked one of Janet Jackson’s early ventures into television acting, showcasing her versatility long before her legendary music career took off.

Have you ever seen A New Kind of Family? Do you think it could have succeeded with a longer run or better timing?
