On this day, January 27, 1986, Public Image Ltd (PiL), led by former Sex Pistols frontman John Lydon, released their fifth studio album, Album. Known for its minimalist title, the record showcased PiL’s shift towards a more polished and accessible sound while retaining their experimental roots.

Album reached #115 on the Billboard 200 and featured standout tracks like Rise, which became one of the band’s most recognizable songs. Produced by Bill Laswell, the album featured contributions from an impressive roster of musicians, including Steve Vai on guitar and Ginger Baker on drums.

Fun Fact: The minimalist naming convention wasn’t limited to the album title—its formats were also labeled Cassette and Compact Disc for their respective releases.

Trivia Question: What phrase from the song Rise became one of PiL’s most famous lyrics, repeated throughout the track?
