On this day, January 23, 1989, Tone Lōc released his debut album, Loc-ed After Dark. The album skyrocketed to success, reaching #1 on the US Billboard 200 and cementing Tone Lōc as one of the early pioneers of mainstream hip-hop.

The album featured the iconic hit Wild Thing, which became an anthem of the late 80s and one of the first rap songs to break into the Top 10 of the Billboard Hot 100. Another hit single, Funky Cold Medina, showcased Tone Lōc’s unique gravelly voice and storytelling ability, further solidifying his place in hip-hop history.

Fun Fact: Wild Thing was co-written by Young MC, another prominent figure in late 80s rap, and its riff was based on Jamie’s Cryin’ by Van Halen.

Trivia Question: What was the name of Tone Lōc’s second hit single from Loc-ed After Dark that became a Top 10 hit in 1989?
