On this day, January 19, 1981, Styx released their tenth studio album, Paradise Theatre. A concept album, it tells the story of the rise and fall of Chicago’s iconic Paradise Theatre, serving as a metaphor for the changing American cultural and political landscape.

Paradise Theatre became one of Styx’s most successful albums, reaching #1 on the Billboard 200 and producing several hit singles, including The Best of Times and Too Much Time on My Hands. The album’s blend of progressive rock and arena-ready anthems cemented Styx’s place as one of the defining bands of the early 80s.

Fun Fact: The vinyl release of Paradise Theatre featured laser-etched designs on the disc itself, making it one of the first albums to incorporate artwork directly onto the record.

Trivia Question: What was the name of Styx’s first #1 album, which they released before Paradise Theatre.
