On this day, January 10, 1986, the sci-fi action thriller Black Moon Rising premiered. Directed by Harley Cokliss, the film starred Tommy Lee Jones as Sam Quint, a thief hired by the government to recover stolen documents, who finds himself entangled with a futuristic car known as the Black Moon.

The cast included Linda Hamilton, fresh off her breakout role in The Terminator, as Nina, a car thief with a conscience, and Robert Vaughn as the ruthless corporate villain. The film combined high-octane car chases, espionage, and a touch of sci-fi, delivering a unique take on the action genre.

Black Moon Rising grossed $6.5 million at the box office, earning a modest but devoted following among fans of 80s action films.

Fun Fact: The story for Black Moon Rising was penned by legendary screenwriter John Carpenter, who originally conceived the idea in the 1970s before passing it on to be developed into a full film.

Have you seen Black Moon Rising? How do you think it compares to other 80s action thrillers?
