On this day, December 5, 1980, the sci-fi cult classic Flash Gordon premiered in theaters. Directed by Mike Hodges, the film brought the iconic comic strip hero to life with a vibrant mix of camp, action, and adventure.

Starring Sam J. Jones as Flash, Melody Anderson as Dale Arden, and Max von Sydow as the sinister Ming the Merciless, the movie also featured Timothy Dalton, Brian Blessed, and Ornella Muti. Despite a budget of $24 million, it earned $27.1 million at the box office, finding its greatest success in its enduring cult following.

A major highlight of the film was its unforgettable soundtrack, composed and performed by Queen, with the theme song “Flash” becoming an instant classic.
