On this day, December 7, 1982, Charles Brooks Jr., a Texas inmate, became the first person in the United States to be executed by lethal injection. Brooks had been convicted of murdering an auto mechanic during a test drive in 1976.

This landmark execution at the Huntsville Unit in Texas marked a significant shift in the methods of capital punishment in the U.S., with lethal injection becoming the most common execution method in subsequent years. While seen as a more “humane” alternative to other forms of execution, it has sparked ongoing debates about ethics, justice, and the death penalty itself.
