On this day, February 2, 1983, "Menudomania" officially took off in the United States when 3,500 screaming fans flooded Kennedy Airport in New York to welcome Puerto Rican boy band Menudo. The group, which had already been a sensation in Latin America, was about to take the U.S. by storm, setting the stage for the first true boy band craze.

Menudo, known for their catchy Spanish-language pop songs, synchronized dance moves, and revolving-door lineup (members were replaced once they hit their mid-teens), became a global phenomenon. Their U.S. popularity skyrocketed following the release of their first English-language album in 1985 and TV appearances that introduced them to American audiences.

Fun Fact: One of Menudo’s most famous former members, Ricky Martin, later became an international superstar, leading the Latin pop explosion of the late 90s!

Trivia Question: Which future Latin pop superstar was a member of Menudo in the 1980s before launching his solo career?
