On this day, December 25, 1987, Steven Spielberg’s Empire of the Sun premiered in theaters. Based on J.G. Ballard’s semi-autobiographical novel, the epic war film stars a young Christian Bale as Jim Graham, a British boy navigating life in a Japanese internment camp during World War II. This visually stunning and emotional film remains one of Spielberg’s most poignant works.
