On May 5, 1980, British Special Air Service forces stormed the Iranian Embassy in London, ending a tense six day hostage crisis. The siege began when six armed men took 26 hostages inside the embassy, demanding autonomy for Iran’s Khuzestan Province. The standoff gripped the UK and was broadcast live across the nation.
The operation, known as Operation Nimrod, lasted only 17 minutes and resulted in the rescue of all but one hostage. It brought the SAS into the global spotlight and is still studied today as a textbook example of counterterrorism tactics.
Fun fact: The embassy assault was one of the first live televised special forces operations in history and helped change public perception of British military capabilities almost overnight.
