On May 4, 1984, the crime drama Alphabet City premiered in theaters. Directed by Amos Poe, the film starred Vincent Spano as a young drug dealer in New York City who is forced to choose between loyalty to his criminal life and saving his family. The cast also featured Jami Gertz and Michael Winslow.

Set over the course of one night, the film used real New York locations and a gritty neon soaked style to tell its story. Alphabet City earned 7 million dollars at the box office and became a cult favorite for its fast pace and strong visual identity.

Fun fact: The entire film was shot in the Alphabet City neighborhood of Manhattan, which at the time was one of the most dangerous areas in New York.
