On this day May 22 1989 Nik Kershaw released his fourth studio album The Works. Known for his earlier 80s hits like Wouldn’t It Be Good and The Riddle, this album saw Kershaw take a more reflective and adult approach to his music. It moved away from his established synthpop sound and leaned into more traditional pop rock arrangements with introspective lyrics.
The Works reached number 55 on the UK Albums Chart. Although it did not achieve the commercial success of his previous records, it still maintained a dedicated fanbase and showcased his growth as a songwriter. The single One Step Ahead was promoted with a music video and saw moderate airplay, but overall the album marked the end of his mainstream chart run during the decade.
Fun fact: Nik Kershaw later described this album as one of his most personal efforts and took a break from solo albums afterward, not releasing another studio album until 1999.
