On This Day: March 8 1986 The Young Ones and Cliff Richard Released a New Version of Living Doll for Comic Relief
On this day March 8 1986 British rock legend Cliff Richard teamed up with the cast of the hit comedy series The Young Ones to release a new version of Living Doll in support of Comic Relief. The song was a reworking of Richard’s 1959 classic but with added comedic elements and spoken-word segments from The Young Ones cast including Rik Mayall Adrian Edmondson Nigel Planer and Christopher Ryan.

The single became a huge success topping the UK charts and raising money for Comic Relief a charity supporting poverty relief and social causes. The unlikely collaboration between a rock and roll icon and the anarchic comedy troupe made it one of the most memorable charity singles of the decade.

Fun fact: Living Doll was originally a number one hit for Cliff Richard and The Shadows in 1959 making this 1986 version his second time reaching the top spot with the same song.

Trivia question: What year was Comic Relief founded in the UK?
