On this day March 6 1981 the psychological horror film Maniac premiered in theaters in Los Angeles. Directed by William Lustig the film starred Joe Spinell as Frank Zito a deeply disturbed serial killer stalking the streets of New York City. Caroline Munro played a photographer who unknowingly becomes his next target.

Maniac was a low-budget independent film made for just 350000 yet it became a major success grossing 10 million at the box office. Known for its gritty atmosphere and shocking violence the film gained a cult following despite controversy over its graphic content.
