On this day March 31 1989 the dark teen comedy Heathers premiered in theaters. Directed by Michael Lehmann the film starred Winona Ryder as Veronica and Christian Slater as J D a dangerous outsider who shakes up the high school social order with deadly consequences.

With its sharp dialogue edgy themes and satirical take on high school cliques Heathers was unlike anything else at the time. While it only earned $1.1 million at the box office on a $3 million budget the movie became a massive cult hit and is now considered one of the most iconic teen films of the 80s.

Fun fact: The film was almost given an X rating due to its controversial content and dark humor but it ultimately helped launch Winona Ryder and Christian Slater into stardom.
