On this day March 30 1984 Romancing the Stone premiered in theaters. Directed by Robert Zemeckis the action adventure comedy starred Michael Douglas Kathleen Turner and Danny DeVito and quickly became one of the most entertaining hits of the decade.

The film followed a shy romance novelist who gets pulled into a real life jungle adventure in Colombia while searching for her kidnapped sister. Along the way she teams up with a rugged adventurer and the two face off against treasure hunters villains and the wild terrain.

Made on a $10 million budget Romancing the Stone was a surprise box office smash earning over $115 million worldwide with $76 million from the US alone. Its mix of comedy action and romance made it a crowd favorite and launched a successful franchise.

Fun fact: The success of Romancing the Stone helped Zemeckis land his next project Back to the Future which would hit theaters the following year.
