On This Day: March 30 1984 Misunderstood Premiered in Theaters
On this day March 30 1984 the emotional family drama Misunderstood premiered in theaters. Directed by Jerry Schatzberg the film starred Gene Hackman as a grieving widowed father struggling to reconnect with his young son played by Henry Thomas who was fresh off his breakout role in E.T.

The story focused on themes of loss communication and emotional distance between a parent and child. Despite strong performances from Hackman and Thomas and a $10 million budget the film only earned $1.5 million at the box office and received mixed reviews from critics. Misunderstood remains a lesser known title in both actors’ careers but it stands as a heartfelt exploration of grief and family dynamics.

Fun fact: Misunderstood was a remake of a 1966 Italian film of the same name directed by Luigi Comencini.

Trivia question: What blockbuster film made Henry Thomas a household name just two years before starring in Misunderstood?
