On this day March 30 1984 Greystoke The Legend of Tarzan Lord of the Apes premiered in theaters. Directed by Hugh Hudson the film offered a serious and dramatic retelling of the classic Tarzan story focusing on his human origins and struggle to adapt between two worlds.

The film starred Christopher Lambert as Tarzan with a strong supporting cast including Andie MacDowell Ralph Richardson Ian Holm James Fox Cheryl Campbell and Ian Charleson. While it stayed true to the spirit of Edgar Rice Burroughs’s original character it leaned more into emotional depth and realism than past adaptations. Made on a $27 million budget Greystoke earned $45.9 million at the box office and received praise for its visuals and mature tone. Ralph Richardson was posthumously nominated for an Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor for his role in the film.

Fun fact: Andie MacDowell’s voice was dubbed over by Glenn Close in the final cut because producers felt her Southern accent didn’t match the character’s British background.
