On This Day: March 26 1982 First Ceremony for the Vietnam Veterans Memorial Held in Washington DC
On this day March 26 1982 the first ceremony for the Vietnam Veterans Memorial was held in Washington DC. Though the memorial would not be officially dedicated until later that year this early ceremony marked a powerful moment of recognition for the more than 58000 Americans who lost their lives in the Vietnam War. The event brought together veterans families and supporters to honor those who served and to reflect on the sacrifices made during the conflict. The memorial itself a black granite wall inscribed with the names of the fallen would soon become one of the most visited and emotionally moving landmarks in the United States.

Fun fact: The design of the Vietnam Veterans Memorial was created by Maya Lin a 21 year old architecture student whose concept was chosen out of more than 1400 submissions in a national design competition.

Trivia question: What year was the Vietnam Veterans Memorial officially dedicated in Washington DC?
