The Outsiders told the story of teenage rival gangs the Greasers and the Socs in 1960s Oklahoma and explored themes of loyalty identity and growing up in a divided world. The film was emotional gritty and true to the spirit of the book. It also marked the film debut of Rob Lowe who would go on to become one of the most recognizable stars of the decade.
