On this day March 22 1985 He-Man and She-Ra The Secret of the Sword premiered in theaters. Directed by Ed Friedman Lou Kachivas Marsh Lamore Bill Reed and Gwen Wetzler the animated film starred the voice talents of John Erwin Melendy Britt Alan Oppenheimer Linda Gary George DiCenzo and Erika Scheimer.

Serving as the origin story for She-Ra the film followed Prince Adam as he discovered that he had a long-lost twin sister Princess Adora who had been raised by the evil Horde. After learning her true identity Adora embraced her destiny as She-Ra and joined the fight against Hordak and his forces. The movie was later split into five episodes to launch the She-Ra Princess of Power animated series.

Fun fact: The Secret of the Sword was the first theatrical release for both He-Man and She-Ra and was one of the few animated feature films based on a toy line to get a wide release.

Trivia question: What was the name of the magical sword that transformed Adora into She-Ra?
