On this day March 18 1988 the comedy sequel Police Academy 5 Assignment Miami Beach premiered in theaters. Directed by Alan Myerson the film starred Bubba Smith David Graf Michael Winslow Leslie Easterbrook Marion Ramsey Janet Jones Lance Kinsey Matt McCoy G W Bailey and George Gaynes.

The fifth installment in the popular Police Academy franchise took the recruits out of their usual city setting and into Miami Beach where they attended a police convention only to get caught up in a criminal plot. While the film maintained the slapstick humor of its predecessors it was the first in the series without Steve Guttenberg as Mahoney due to scheduling conflicts with Three Men and a Baby.

Fun fact: Despite mixed reviews Police Academy 5 was a box office success earning 54.5 million against a 14 million budget proving that the franchise still had a loyal fanbase.

Trivia question: How many total films were released in the Police Academy franchise?
