On This Day: March 16 1982 Victor/Victoria Premiered at Filmex
On this day March 16 1982 the musical comedy Victor/Victoria premiered at FILMEX, the Los Angeles International Film Exposition. Directed by Blake Edwards, the film starred Julie Andrews, James Garner, Robert Preston, Lesley Ann Warren, John Rhys-Davies, and Alex Karras.

Set in 1930s Paris, Victor/Victoria followed a struggling singer who disguises herself as a man performing as a female impersonator, leading to comedic and heartfelt complications. The film was praised for its clever humor, outstanding performances, and its progressive take on gender roles. It went on to earn 28.2 million at the box office against a 15 million budget.

Fun fact: Robert Preston’s role as Toddy was originally offered to Peter Sellers, but he turned it down. Preston’s performance later earned him an Academy Award nomination for Best Supporting Actor.

Trivia question: What Broadway actress starred in the stage adaptation of Victor/Victoria in 1995?
