On this day March 13 1981 the horror film The Howling premiered in theaters. Directed by Joe Dante the film starred Dee Wallace Patrick Macnee Dennis Dugan Christopher Stone and Belinda Balaski.

The Howling became one of the most influential werewolf movies of all time blending horror mystery and dark humor. The film followed a news reporter who after a traumatic encounter with a serial killer retreats to a secluded colony only to discover it is inhabited by werewolves. The film’s groundbreaking special effects by Rob Bottin set a new standard for werewolf transformations and helped establish The Howling as a cult classic.
