On this day March 10 1989 the anthology film New York Stories premiered in theaters. Directed by three legendary filmmakers Woody Allen Francis Ford Coppola and Martin Scorsese the film consisted of three separate short stories each set in New York City.

The film featured an ensemble cast including Woody Allen Rosanna Arquette Mia Farrow Giancarlo Giannini Julie Kavner Nick Nolte Talia Shire Don Novello Mae Questel Steve Buscemi and Heather McComb. Each segment reflected the unique storytelling style of its director ranging from romantic drama to comedy and psychological introspection.

Despite its ambitious concept and star power New York Stories struggled at the box office earning 10.7 million against a 15 million budget. While not a commercial success the film remains a fascinating collaboration between three of cinema’s most influential directors.
