On this day March 10 1987 the video game Goonies II was released for the Nintendo Entertainment System (NES). A sequel to the hit 1985 film The Goonies the game expanded on the movie’s story introducing new locations and enemies while maintaining the adventurous spirit of the film.
Developed and published by Konami Goonies II followed Mikey as he set out to rescue his kidnapped friends from the Fratellis while also searching for the mythical mermaid Annie. The game combined side-scrolling action with first-person exploration making it one of the more unique NES adventure titles of its time.
Fun fact: Despite its name there was never an official Goonies I released for the NES in North America. The first Goonies game was available in Japan and only reached the US in arcades through the PlayChoice-10 system.
Trivia question: What was the name of the pirate whose treasure the Goonies were searching for in the original 1985 film?
